The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has admitted to a mistake in a banner displayed during a preparatory meeting in Nalbari ahead of its upcoming “Justice for Zubeen Garg” (Samadal) campaign. The banner, meant to promote the statewide program demanding justice for the late singer Zubeen Garg, had a misspelling in its slogan and notably missed including Zubeen’s photograph, sparking criticism from fans and social media users.
The banner had the slogan written as #JusticForZubeenGarg instead of #JusticeForZubeenGarg, and its absence of Zubeen’s picture was seen by many as a sign of negligence. The issue quickly gained attention online, with netizens expressing disappointment and calling out the BJP for what they described as a “careless error” ahead of such an emotional campaign.
Responding to the controversy, Rajiv Sharma, BJP’s state spokesperson, addressed a press conference at the party headquarters in Basistha, Guwahati, on Tuesday. He admitted the mistake, calling it an “unintentional error,” and confirmed that it had been immediately corrected. “The error in the banner was completely unintentional and was rectified as soon as it was noticed. We deeply respect Zubeen Garg and his contribution to Assam. The party regrets any misunderstanding caused,” Sharma said.
He also dismissed reports circulating on social media regarding a supposed controversy around the proposed ‘Mayabini Udyan’ in Nalbari, which is to be named after Zubeen Garg. Sharma said the claims were “false and misleading,” adding that the BJP remains committed to honouring Zubeen’s memory through positive and respectful initiatives.
Meanwhile, during the same press meet, Sharma also addressed questions about the long-standing land rights issue concerning Assam’s tea community. He stated that the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government was taking firm steps to ensure fair distribution of land among tea workers. “During the Congress rule, large areas of tea garden land were leased to private contractors, depriving tea workers of their rights. The current government is determined to reverse that injustice,” he said.
According to Sharma, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has already initiated steps to reclaim leased land and distribute land pattas to genuine tea workers. “Over two lakh applications have been received from tea workers across Assam, and the process of granting land rights is being fast-tracked,” he informed.
The Justice for Zubeen Garg (Samadal) program is scheduled to begin in Nalbari on today and will move through Mangaldoi, Dibrugarh, and Cachar in the following days. The campaign, announced by BJP State President Dilip Saikia, aims to express the party’s commitment to ensuring transparency in the investigation into Zubeen Garg’s death.
