Students across Assam faced an interesting challenge in the Half-Yearly English Examination 2025 for Higher Secondary 2nd Year, as the Assam State School Education Board included questions on the life and career of Assamese music legend Zubeen Garg. The passage in the Reading Skill section introduced students to Zubeen’s early life, family background, career achievements, and contributions to Assamese culture.
According to the exam paper from Bajali District’s IEC, the passage highlighted that Zubeen Garg, born Zubeen Barthakur on 18 November 1972 in Tura, Meghalaya, was inspired by his musical family. His father, Mohini Mohan Barthakur, was a magistrate and poet, while his mother, Ily Barthakur, was a singer. Students were then asked questions such as: What was Zubeen Garg’s father’s profession? and What other fields did Zubeen work in apart from singing? These questions required students to pay attention to details and recall key facts about his versatile career, including his work as a composer, actor, and filmmaker.
Another question focused on Zubeen Garg’s status as a cultural icon, asking why he is remembered as a true Assamese pride. The passage pointed out his contributions to music, social causes, and the representation of Assamese culture across India and beyond. Students were expected to reflect on his impact and legacy, which made him a household name in the Northeast.
For students preparing for future exams, this paper served as both a test of reading and understanding, and as an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of one of Assam’s most beloved artists.
