Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that a new law that will make polygamy a punishable offence in the state, while also taking a swipe at the Congress over its claims on “outside voters” ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.

Speaking at the cheque distribution ceremony under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhijan at Abhayeswari Higher Secondary and Multi-Purpose School in Abhayapuri, Sarma said, “If you marry more than one person, you may face up to seven years of rigorous imprisonment.” The legislation, titled The Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025, is set to be tabled in the Assam Assembly on November 25.

The Chief Minister also addressed claims made by the Congress regarding the alleged entry of “outside voters” into Assam. “Who will feed them? Where will they stay? Who will bear the cost?” Sarma asked. He argued that such allegations are politically motivated and have no factual basis, drawing parallels to similar claims made during the CAA movement.

Sarma also criticised the Congress for neglecting the rights of villagers despite ruling the state for 60 years. “They voted for Congress, but Congress did nothing for them,” he said, pointing to delays in issuing land pattas that have contributed to current eviction drives on forest land.

The Chief Minister hinted at upcoming welfare initiatives, including a new scheme aimed at supporting journalists and a “Babu Scheme” for children, which is expected to be launched from January 1. He also welcomed NCERT’s decision to remove references to Tipu Sultan and Babur from school textbooks, calling it “a good step” and reiterating his stance on revising historical narratives.
