Anil Bania, who was earlier arrested by Assam Police in Biswanath for allegedly sharing pro-Pakistan content linked to the Pahalgam incident, officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on November 26. His induction into the ruling party marks a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.

Bania was arrested by Behali Police in Biswanath district on April 25 during a crackdown targeting individuals accused of spreading anti-national messages on social media. At the time, he held the position of Central Assistant Secretary of the Chhatra Mukti Sangram Samiti. His arrest was publicly acknowledged by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who had tweeted about intensified efforts to curb anti-national activities in the state. In his post, CM Sarma specifically named Bania alongside another arrested individual, highlighting the administration’s proactive stance against social media content promoting anti-national sentiments.

Bania’s social media activity had drawn attention due to posts containing derogatory remarks against the Chief Minister. In one post, he wrote, “The Chief Minister of Assam was born on a day meant for telling lies — will he ever speak the truth in his life to the people?”

Despite his controversial past, Bania was welcomed into the BJP by State President Dilip Saikia and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah.
